Yoga And The Great Outdoors – Your Zen Life

Yoga And The Great Outdoors

For those of us who enjoy the combination of fitness and outdoor activities, how can we stay in shape while simultaneously keeping our internal body systems warm and fully-functional as the winter season approaches?

During wellness weeks for Pinetrees Lodge on Lord Howe Island, I teach the last class of the week near the base of Mount Gower mountain – a majestic area with ocean views –  at a spot called Little Island. Situated a short walk along a disused road, this is a rewarding trek for anyone. The track passes in and out of the palm forest, and at the end of the path, the vegetation forms a tunnel to walk through-and-under.  At Little Island, I have spectacular views, both of the cliff walls above, and the ocean beyond.  As I look up at the cliffs and mountain top, the epic scenery reminds me – much like the ‘mountain-top’ pose in yoga – to stand tall and proud, and to hold my ground. The glimmering ocean water views teach me to flow with my practice (and with life itself); and as the birds float in the air-streams – which mirror the ebb and flow of the ‘crow pose’ – I’m reminded of the importance of my freedom to make choices and adjust with every up and down of my individual journey. As a turtle swims by, I see the connection to the ‘turtle pose’, which teaches me to turn inwardly and accept “what is”, without judgment. It’s during these moments when I truly come to appreciate how the combination of yoga and the outdoors assists an individual in reflecting the beauty that exists everywhere, both within and without.

LARA BINGLE IS NATURALLY GORGEOUS {AND LOOKS EVEN MORE BEAUTIFUL IN REAL LIFE}…

her glow shines from the inside-out, and yoga plays a part in that. To get you glowing, here’s the routine our yoga contributor, Charlotte Dodson created for Lara…

Yoga is a reflection of yourself, and is a hidden secret to allowing you to be true and shine in every way. When you appreciate and love life, that’s what everyone sees around you.

How often does Lara work out / practice yoga? Lara is such a lovely person. She’s passionate about health, well-being and truly understands the depth of the yogic philosophy. She practices regularly, whether this be a 20 minute dynamic routine, an hour or simply sitting quietly in meditation. It’s all a form of yoga – ways to live and cherish every single moment.

To work your ‘whole body’ like Lara {like in the workout I created for her, below} – yoga is the perfect toning tool. It’s a muscular practice that creates strength and length at the same time, creating a sculpted toned body. We naturally use our body weight, so it’s perfect at any given time. Try to practice yoga and/or walk every day or even second day to allow the beneficial changing effects to take place in your body. That way you’ll see results quicker.

Going away to get well – Financial Review

Travel trend: going away to get well

Travel_lake

Forget fame and fortune; it is well-being that tops to-do lists for global travellers.

Regular travel can be the enemy of wellness. Jet lag, indulgent food, too much alcohol and scant exercise are just some of the challenges faced by those who value fitness and health.

However, a global movement towards “healthy hotels” means that frequent flyers are able to stay in peak condition on the road. According to Spafinder Wellness, the world’s largest media, marketing and gifting company for the wellness industry, the healthy hotel will eventually become more inspired and comprehensive and move from the exception to the rule.

It says “healthy hotels” fall within the category of wellness tourism, which sits at the intersection of the global $US2 trillion ($2.4 trillion) wellness and $US6.6 trillion travel and tourism economies.

And don’t think we’re talking about health retreats or spas. It’s “secondary-purpose” travellers – those for whom wellness-related activities are part of the trip not the reason for it – who are driving the wellness travel market, according to a research report conducted by SRI International for the Global Spa & Wellness Summit.

Forget fame and fortune; it is well-being that tops to-do lists for global travellers, according to a survey conducted by Westin Hotels & Resorts, which has more than 190 properties in nearly 40 countries and territories.

Maintaining a balanced sense of well-being was seen as a status symbol by 62 per cent of respondents, outranking professional accomplishment (47 per cent). “Global citizens are ultra-aware of their state of well-being and interested in what they can do to maintain it and improve their health and balance – even when faced with accelerated stress,” says Brian Povinelli, global brand leader, Westin Hotels & Resorts.

Sleep, eats and treats

At Westin, “Heavenly Beds (a plush, pillow-top construction), SuperFoodsRx dishes, WestinWORKOUTs and Heavenly Spa treatments” are designed to “leave you feeling better than when you arrived”.

It’s all part of a $15 million brand-wide campaign and includes such initiatives as Westin Gear Lending that offers guests a loan of New Balance workout wear and, from next year, The Juicery, which will feature energising juices and smoothies.

In Australia, a yoga tool kit has also been developed for Westin by Charlotte Dodson, whose A-list clientele which has included Orlando Bloom, Phoebe Tonkin and Stephanie Rice.

According to Andrew Gibson, vice-president, Spa and Wellness, FRHI Hotels & Resorts: “The wellness movement is starting to reach a critical mass of awareness which will mean that hotel brands have to embrace the full concept.”

Miranda Kerr’s yoga moves – BellaMUMMA

MIRANDA KERR’S FAVOURITE YOGA MOVES

HAVING WORKED WITH MIRANDA KERR FOR OVER 10 YEARS, I CAN TRULY SAY HER PASSION FOR YOGA WILL STAY WITH HER FOR LIFE

Yoga is a far deeper experience than physical exercise, which is why I’d love to share some of Miranda’s favourite yoga moves with you.

by yoga contributor, Charlotte Dodson

Life is full of surprises and new adventures, and hopefully – with an open heart and attitude – you can see all of those possibilities unfold before your very own eyes. Sometimes we’re just asleep, or simply not ready to see it. It’s all to be found in your own good time. Yoga teaches you to live life in the present moment, to cherish all that you have, and be grateful for all that you are.

But how? As a teacher I have found that the poses and the practice itself act as a mirror for your present state of being, as an indication of your true ‘self’. We can only practice and teach from experience : what we believe, and where we’re at at any given time. As an example, when you open up deeper into backbends, you’ll notice opportunities will open up around you. To stop for a moment and actually ‘check in’ to notice how you feel, rather than running away from yourself, will give you the power to own your world. Yoga will give you the tools to keep you grounded, rejuvenated, and creating a flexible and strong body, mind, and spirit. It really feeds into all areas of your life, you just need to reflect and be open to it in order to truly feel and see it. It really works!

So here are some tools for you to use when you need them – Miranda swears by them, and given her compassionate, kind and considerate nature, they are clearly working for her!. After all, the practice is there for you – both on and OFF the yoga mat.
